COLLEGE HOSTS SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL & PERFORMANCES
The College is hosting the New York Summer Music Festival this year for the third time. The festival attracts talented young musicians from around the world to study with top music faculty and performers. The festival also features performances by professional musicians, faculty, and students. Admission to most performances, which are held in the Goodrich Theater, Fine Arts, is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend. The entire schedule of performances is available through the festival's web site at www.nysmf.org Performances by two visiting artists are scheduled for this week. On Tuesday, July 22, John Riley performed on drums. Riley is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music and SUNY Purchase, and he is an artist-in-residence at the Amsterdam Conservatory in Holland. He is the author of The Art of Bop Drumming, Beyond Bop Drumming, and The Jazz Drummer's Workshop. Riley has taught master classes around the world. Today, Wednesday, July 23, at 8 p.m., Victor Danchenko will perform on violin. Danchenko is an internationally renowned artist, whose awards include the gold medal in the Soviet National Competition and the Ysaye Gold Medal. He has performed as a soloist in the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America to high critical acclaim. Danchenko is on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music and the Peabody Conservatory of Music, and he has conducted master classes in the US, Canada, Japan, South America, Israel, and Europe. The New York Summer Music Festival at SUNY-Oneonta presents students a nurturing atmosphere in which they can experience the highest level of musical training. Areas of study for the students, who range in age from 10 to 25, include orchestra, band, choral ensembles, original musical theater projects, composition, and jazz. Classes are also offered in beginning piano and beginning guitar as well as supplemental areas such as music history, theory, computer technology in music, filmmaking, and jazz improvisation. Students can take private lessons for all major and secondary instruments, voice, and composition. Some of the finest musicians and teachers in the world will visit the festival in 2008 to host master classes and clinics. Faculty are drawn from the prestigious Curtis, Juilliard, and Manhattan Schools of Music, among many others. The New York Summer Music Festival offers complimentary, professional-quality student performances to the entire Oneonta community and the surrounding region. The festival has more than 50 different performing ensembles and classes, which collectively perform nearly 30 weekly/biweekly concerts, allowing students the opportunity to learn in both the classroom and the concert hall. On Sunday, July 20, students presented a concert featuring recitals, the wind ensemble, the chamber orchestra, and the select jazz ensemble, and later that evening, counselors and teaching assistants presented a recital. Robert Barstow, Music, serves as Chairman of the Board of the New York State Music Festival. More information about the festival and the performances is available on the web at www.nysmf.org or by phone at (607) 267-4024.

COURSE EVALUATIONS GOING ELECTRONIC
Data for the Student Perception of Instruction (SPI) course evaluation process will be collected via Angel this summer. All registered students have access to their courses via Angel regardless of whether or not a faculty member uses this resource. For this summer, students will receive periodic notices directing them to Angel to evaluate their courses. The system will be available for course evaluation for the last few days of each summer session. This is a piloting of this method for course evaluation. It addresses the need to provide an evaluative method for the growing number of on-line courses, as well as moves the process to a more efficient and cost effective approach to evaluation. Please encourage your students to participate in this process. Faculty wishing to use the traditional paper evaluation process may obtain materials from their respective department offices. Any questions should be directed to Steve Johnson at x3592 or johnsosd.

INCREASE IN PERSONAL CAR MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT
Effective July 1, 2008, the personal car mileage reimbursement rate increased to 58.5 cents per mile. This rate is in effect for all business miles driven between July 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008. Please feel free to contact Terri Thomas at x3530 or Becca O’Donnell at x2555 for any travel related questions.

PILOT OF ANGEL ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO
As you may know, the College currently uses ANGEL for its Course management System. Included with this system is an electronic portfolio system called ANGEL ePortfolio. Starting this fall (2008) semester, we will be piloting this electronic system. If we find this system meets our needs we may decide to implement it in the spring of 2009. Feedback from faculty who use this system will have significant influence on whether we implement this new product or not. Let me reiterate, this is a pilot! If you are interested in learning more about ANGEL ePortfolio or participating in the pilot this fall please contact Deb McClenon at x2871 or email mcclendl@oneonta.edu.

This program does not reimburse your public transportation costs but does allow for qualifying expenses to be deducted from your paycheck on a pretax basis. Online enrollment begins July 2, 2008. Check your campus mail for an informational flyer and an optional NYS-Ride Employee Information Meeting Schedule.
