ATTENTION: WORK STUDY-TEACHING ASSISTANT SUPERVISORS?
Please do not send your work study/teaching assistants to the Instruction Support Center the first week of classes for training unless you can accompany them to do initial training and sign out processes. The ISC is so busy during the first week with little or no student staffing. It is impossible to find the time to train students the first week. It would also help if you would phone ahead for student training in the following weeks. Remember that those students assigned to your department that will be doing classroom work for you in the Instructional Support Center this semester, must have their names on file in the ISC. Please send an email to Mona Hughes at hughesml@oneonta.edu, listing your student’s names, department, and titles. Students not on file in the ISC will not be allowed to do work in the center. Students are not allowed to handle any part of exams, quizzes, or test forms, and will not be allowed to violate copyright laws. If you have any questions, please phone x2490, or send a note to the above email address.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Marjorie Pietraface will be stepping down from her role as EAP Coordinator. Marge has done a wonderful job as coordinator, helping our employees with referrals and organizing seminars. She will be missed and we thank her for all of her hard work and dedication. Effective Monday, September 1, Ricky O’Donnell will takeover as EAP Coordinator until a permanent replacement can be found. A search will commence during the fall semester. We are fortunate that Ricky has offered her services as she was the previous EAP Coordinator for a number of years for our campus. Please welcome Ricky into this role. The phone number for EAP Services will be the same at x2452. If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Nicosia, EAP Committee Chair at x2294. The NYS Employee Assistance Program is a peer assistance program jointly sponsored by labor and management. NYS EAP provides confidential information, assessment, and referral services to NYS employees, their family members, and retirees. It also provides orientations and training for all employees, managers, supervisors, and union representatives on benefits and use of EAP.

TWO EXHIBITIONS KICK OFF NEW SEMESTER
Supernatural, and Echoes From the Past, are two exhibitions that will open in the Fine Art galleries to begin the new semester. The galleries will host a double reception for both artists on Thursday, September 11, from 5-7 p.m. sponsored by the Alumni Association and the Office of the President. The Martin–Mullen Art Gallery will feature Echoes From the Past works by faculty member Thomas Sakoulas. The exhibition will be on display from Monday, September 8-Saturday, October 18 and will feature 23 relief sculptures carved in bluestone, 2 soapstone carvings, several sheet metal sculptures, large formatted drawings and an original lithograph. In the New Gallery, Supernatural, works by Utica based artist Tom Mazzullo, will display 28 silverpoint drawings, 2 brass point drawings, three pastels and four watercolors from Tuesday, September 2-Friday, October 3. Mazzullo states that “Drawing is the primary means by which an artist turns nothing into something. This is what the exhibition title Supernatural refers to.” Both artists will be present at the reception; Mazzullo will present a gallery talk from 4-5 p.m. before the reception on September 11. Thomas Sakoulas will give a presentation about his work later in the semester. Date to be announced in a later Bulletin.

COLLEGE TO OFFER MASTER'S IN EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
The College will soon begin offering a new Master of Science in Education program in Educational Technology, according to an announcement by Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs F. Daniel Larkin. The College recently received approval from the State Education Department to offer the program. The program is designed to provide certified elementary and secondary teachers with a greater understanding of the teaching-learning process and specifically to develop skills in employing multiple technologies to enhance students' performance. Teachers who complete the program will be eligible for initial certification as Educational Technology specialists and will be eligible for professional certification in both Educational Technology and in the discipline of their initial certification. Applications for the program are now available for the fall and spring semesters. The program will offer courses in the late afternoon and evening so that working teachers will be able to enroll. Undergraduate students who have earned initial licensure to teach will also be eligible to enroll in the program. More information about the program is available from Joanne Curran, Associate Dean of Education, at x2541.

PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION MUST BE SHREDDED
This is a reminder to all faculty and staff from the Registrar’s Office and the Office of Human Resources. Any printed material that contains either student or employee personally identifiable information must be shredded. It cannot be thrown into the garbage or with the recyclables. Employees who do not have access to departmental shredders can use the shredder that is located in the Print Shop, in the basement of the Administration Building. ONEONTA ID NUMBER POLICY
In response to a New York State law enacted in 2000, all students are assigned an Oneonta ID number or A00 number. These numbers are used as a unique student identifier. They are printed on class rosters and are used by students when asking for services at the College. According to FERPA and campus policy, these numbers are to be treated in the same manner as the social security number. Please take care to provide the maximum security for all student record information. It is incumbent on all of us to protect our students’ privacy. If you would like a refresher on FERPA or if you have any questions regarding privacy of student records, please contact Maureen P. Artale, College Registrar at x3216 or artalemp@oneonta.edu.

INFORMATION ON SUBMITTING PAPERS TO AN ANTI-PLAGIARISM SERVICE
If you are using an anti-plagiarism service such as www.turnitin.com, you must remove the student’s name and assign a code name to each paper you submit. The code name must not be the student’s ID number or any part there of and should only be known to you. Using the student’s name or ID number is a violation of the students FERPA rights because you are releasing personally identifiable information without his/her written consent. If you have any questions on FERPA please contact Maureen P. Artale, College Registrar at x3216 or via e-mail at artalemp@oneonta.edu.

The work was recently featured in June at the renaming of the Art Gallery during Reunion Weekend. The work is installed throughout the lower level corridor and in the Union Square room. Thank you to Tim Sheesley, director of the college’s Martin-Mullen Art Gallery for his work and expertise to install this exhibit. The Hunt College Union is extremely grateful and honored by Mr. Mullen’s gift and we invite you to stop by and enjoy the work of our former students and alumni.

AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOODMOBILE - AUGUST 29
On Friday, August 29, CSRC and American Red Cross are sponsoring a Blood Drive at the Hunt College Union Ballroom from 12 noon to 5 p.m. This is one of four blood drives CSRC will sponsor this semester. Last year, volunteers on our campus donated 315 pints of blood, helping over 915 people. Help us increase our goal by 57 pints of blood this academic year. If we reach our goal, the American Red Cross will give our campus a $350 scholarship for a lucky student! In past blood drives, we have not seen many faculty and staff as donors. CSRC invites faculty and staff members to check their schedules and plan to serve as a model for our students. Phone CSRC at x2262 to set up an appointment. Registration will also be held during lunch and dinner hours at Mills and Wilsbach Dining Halls on August 27 & 28. Walk-ins are welcome, but those with appointments will come first while walk-ins may have to wait for some time. Did you know that one-pint of blood can save three lives? Please give the gift of life and volunteer to donate!

“SWIM WITH THE FISH” TEAM FUNDRAISER – SEPTEMBER 2-25
The Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams are again offering swim lessons to area children during the month of September. Two time slots on Tuesdays and Thursdays are available. The first time option will run from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and the second time option will run from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The lessons will begin on Tuesday, September 2 and run until Thursday, September 25. There will be 8 classes in total, the cost is $6.00/class. Classes will be held at the Chase pool. The teams are also offering the 30 minutes option for children 3 years old and younger. The session is a one-on-one lesson for 30 minutes at a cost of $6.00/class. The younger children really benefit with the one-on-one attention and their little bodies can usually only tolerate the water for about 20 to 30 minutes. We need to know whether you prefer the early time slot or the later time slot, the first and last name of your child, their age, and approximately the swimming ability of your child, as well as a number where you can be reached during the day. Please contact Chris Schuler at x2505 or schulee@oneonta.edu as soon as possible to register, or if you need more information. Checks can be made payable to SUNY Oneonta, you may pay on the first day of class or as you go. Looking forward to hearing from you. We have always enjoyed and appreciated your involvement with our program, thank you for your support.

CARD ACCESS AT ALUMNI FIELD HOUSE
Beginning immediately, the Alumni Field House will be a card access only building. Card access will especially affect admittance to the fitness center when the building is open for general use by the campus community. You will no longer be able to gain access to the fitness center unless you have your ID card and it has been validated for entry into the fitness center. Your card will be used for the fitness center in the same way it is used to enter residence halls and other card access buildings on campus. Entry into the Alumni Field House and the use of all other spaces in the building are not affected during normal hours of operation. In order for faculty, staff and students to use the fitness center, your ID card will have to be activated by the college after successfully completing an online orientation program for the fitness center. The program is designed to provide instruction on the safe use of all fitness center equipment as well as identify our users. To complete the online orientation program go to the athletics department homepage at www.oneonta.edu/academics/athletics and click on the button that is designated for this online program. After successful completion of the online orientation program you will be prompted to enter information that will be forwarded to the Athletics Department to grant card access. Please be aware that the processing of the data and entry into the card access system may take up to 72 hours to be completed. Please be patient with the fitness center staff while we move through the initial phase of implementation. Should you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact the Athletic Department at x3594 or e-mail lombarke@oneonta.edu or welshkm@oneonta.edu.

REPORT THREATS AND CRIMES
In the interest of campus safety and security, all members of the campus community are encouraged to phone the Office of Student Development, x2513, to express concerns about anyone who might be regarded as a threat to themselves or others. If there is an immediate threat or emergency, phone University Police at 911 or x3550. All employees are expected to inform the College if they know of a crime that has been committed on campus. Members of the campus community will be notified if such information indicates that there is a threat to the safety of the community.

CONGRATULATIONS
  • Congratulations to Kay Benjamin, Milne Library, on her recent promotion. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs F. Daniel Larkin recently announced that Kay has been promoted to the rank of associate librarian. She began working at the College's Milne Library in 1990 as an assistant librarian. She has held positions at the College as a librarian specializing in government documents, reference and instruction, electronic services, and distance learning.
  • Congratulations to world class athlete Mia Hamm. President Nancy Kleniewski is proud to announce that on Saturday, August 2, 2008 on campus, a small ceremony was held to confer the honorary doctorate of Humane Letters for Ms. Hamm. At the request of Ms. Hamm a private ceremony was conducted to officially bestow the honorary degree. SUNY Oneonta’s College Council Chair, Patrick Brown, and Council member, David Brenner, bestowed the award for the establishment of the Mia Hamm Foundation, ( http://www.miafoundation.org). The state of New York had awarded Hamm’s degree in 2005, but because of her schedule and family commitments she was not able to return to Oneonta until this August 2nd when she was involved with the Soccer Hall of Fame Induction of her coach Ansance Dorrance. The Mia Hamm Foundation raises funds for bone marrow transplant patients and encourages girl and women’s development in sports.
FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
  • Jacqueline Bennett and Harry E. Pence, Chemistry and Biochemistry, were each invited to give presentations at a symposium entitled, Sustainability across the Chemistry Curriculum: Green Chemistry and Beyond, which was held on August 16, 2008 at the Fall National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Bennett’s paper was entitled, Green Imine Synthesis Appropriate for Undergraduate Organic Chemistry. She described how she and her undergraduate students have developed a new way to synthesize a type of intermediate compound used to make a variety of pharmaceutical compounds. Her synthesis uses a much simpler procedure that requires no heat, uses a renewable and biodegradable solvent approved by the FDA as a food additive, and results in higher purity and greater yield than traditional methods. Dr. Pence’s talk was entitled, Introducing the Topic of Sustainability through Specific Chemistry Courses. He explained how he introduced the interrelated topics of globalization and sustainability into his courses in Environmental Chemistry and Environmental Health Chemistry at Oneonta.
  • James Ebert, Earth Sciences, was an invited panelist for a public forum on drilling for natural gas in Otsego and Delaware counties. The meeting, held on August 6, 2008 in the Oneonta High School Auditorium, was hosted by the Otsego County Planning Department. Dr. Ebert presented Geology of the Marcellus Shale and Gas Well Drilling and answered questions from the audience at the end of the forum.
  • Ashok Kumar Malhotra, Philosophy, published a poem Rainbow and Rain, in The Best Poems and Poets of 2007, in The International Library of Poetry, summer 2008.
  • John McCaslin-Doyle, Theatre, presented a paper entitled The Challenge of Producing a “Black” Play on the University Mainstage on the panel “Theatrical Collaboration- Staging Race” sponsored by the Black Theatre Association at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education International Conference in Denver. The paper dealt with McCaslin-Doyle’s experience directing James Baldwin’s Blues for Mister Charlie in 2004, a production that was recognized with a special citation from the Kennedy Center American Theatre College Festival for ensemble acting. The paper examined how such collaboration responds both to racism on and off campus and celebrates the benefits of cultural differences. While at the conference McCaslin-Doyle also participated in a panel discussion on student advisement and presented a second paper entitled The Transition from Student Organization to Recognized Faculty Curriculum and volunteered as a mentor for the National Young Scholars Program at the American Theatre and Drama Society annual meeting.
  • Erik Schlimmer, Physical Education, had his article, Giardia Myth-Buster: How Hearsay, Rumors and Anecdotal Evidence Have Scared Backpackers Waterless, published in the July 2008 Catskill Mountain Region Guide. The article refutes the popular but mistaken belief that all backcountry water is contaminated Giardia, a protozoan parasite known to cause intestinal distress.
