SEEKING QUALIFIED TUTORS
As always, The Center for Academic Development and Enrichment (CADE) is seeking faculty recommendations for qualified tutors for 100- and 200-level courses for the Fall semester. Tutors are paid for their time, and tutoring experience looks great on a resume. Please take a few minutes to look over your class lists from previous semesters and e-mail Mary Dorn at dornmb@oneonta.edu with any recommendations you have for new tutors. These recommendations will help CADE to provide tutors who can effectively assist students with class material. CADE is here to support instructors in their endeavor to lead students to academic success. You may want to refer your students to http://cade.oneonta.edu/signup to apply to be a tutor or to get a tutor.

REMINDER ON POSTING GRADES
Federal law (FERPA) prohibits posting grades using student names and/or identification numbers. However, it is permissible to post by code name or number (not the Oneonta I.D. number, social security number, or any part thereof) agreed to by the student and the faculty member. Wherever you post grades, please scramble the names on the roster before assigning codes so that the list does not reflect an alphabetical listing of your roster. It is also against FERPA regulations to leave students’ graded work in a general pick up area. Graded course work must be returned individually to students. Please be aware that under no circumstances may a listing of student names and ID numbers, or any part thereof, be posted for any reason. Violations of this law can result in termination of Federal funding to the college. Questions regarding the privacy of student records should be directed to Maureen P. Artale, College Registrar at x3216 or via e-mail at artalemp@oneonta.edu.

ONEONTA WEATHER FORECASTS
Oneonta Weather forecasts are disseminated twice daily by students for WONY and can be accessed at: http://www.oneonta.edu/academics/wxclub/weather.wav.

STUDENTS HANDLING EXAMS
Students must not be involved in the preparation, duplication, transportation or distribution of examinations. In addition, students including undergraduate teaching assistants, must not be permitted to grade, or in any manner process tests or papers. This includes using the Scan Tron machines to grade tests or quizzes and distributing graded materials to other students. If you have questions regarding this, please contact Maureen P. Artale, College Registrar, at x3216.

HUMAN RESOURCES NEEDS TO KNOW!
When employees are absent from work for longer than five consecutive days due to personal illness, birth of a baby or death or illness of an immediate family member, they need to contact Human Resources to verify the status of their benefits (leave accruals, health insurance, etc.) prior to and during their absences. Please help us provide you with the appropriate information on a timely basis by informing us IMMEDIATELY whenever you might anticipate being absent from work for more than one week. This will enable us to help you maximize your benefits. Of course, be sure to communicate with your supervisor(s) about such absences, too. In fact, supervisors should notify the Human Resources office in the event employees are unable to do so. Thank you for your cooperation. If anyone has any questions, please contact Human Resources at x2509.

QUALIFYING EVENTS MAY IMPACT HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE
A variety of events may impact eligibility for you and/or your dependents for health insurance coverage. These include, but are not limited to, marriage, separation, divorce, birth/death of a dependent, a change in spouse’s employment/health coverage, a change in child’s age, student status or marital status or domestic partner status. To ensure that appropriate coverage begins/ends timely, it is imperative that employees contact Human Resources prior to, or within 7 days following, a qualifying event. If anyone has any questions, contact Human Resources at x2509.

INFORMATION ON SUBMITTING PAPERS TO AN ANTI-PLAGIARISM SERVICE
If you are using an anti-plagiarism service such as www.turnitin.com, you must remove the student’s name and assign a code name to each paper you submit. The code name must not be the student’s ID number or any part there of and should only be known to you. Using the student’s name or ID number is a violation of the students FERPA rights because you are releasing personally identifiable information without his/her written consent. If you have any questions on FERPA please contact Maureen P. Artale, College Registrar at x3216 or via e-mail at artalemp@oneonta.edu.

NYS-RIDE
To all state employees: This past summer the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations announced a new program to allow New York State employees to pay for certain work-related transportation expenses on a pre-tax basis. This is an effort to support a greener New York and to help state employees save money. NYS-Ride is being offered to all New York State employees. This program does not reimburse your public transportation costs but does allow for qualifying expenses to be deducted from your paycheck on a pretax basis. Some carriers in this area include Oneonta Public Transport (OPT), Broome County Transit, Chenango County Public Transit, T-Tran, Adirondack Trailways, and Amtrak North East. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact WageWorks at www.worklife.state.ny.us or contact Human Resources at x2509.

A CHORUS LINE - SEPTEMBER 26-28
Orpheus Theatre will open their 25th Anniversary MainStage Season with a production of A Chorus Line, Friday-Sunday, September 26-28 in the Belden Auditorium, Oneonta High School, with performances running Friday & Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Originally conceived, directed, and choreographed by Michael Bennett with book by James Kirkwood & Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch, and lyrics by Edward Kleban, A Chorus Line is a stunning musical about a chorus audition for a Broadway Musical. It tells of the achingly poignant ambitions of professional Broadway gypsies to land a job in the show, and is a powerful metaphor for all human aspiration. With performances by a number of SUNY-Oneonta students, two alumni, and members of our community, this production is a brilliantly complex fusion of dance, song, and compelling authentic drama, A Chorus Line has continued to dazzle audiences since it originally opened on Broadway in 1975. Directed by R.B. Schlather with Choreography by Carleigh Bettiol, A Chorus Line contains adult language and content and may not be suitable for younger audiences. Tickets are available by phoning 432-9392. For additional information, please contact Michelle Gardner at gardnemg@oneonta.edu.

CATSKILL SYMPHONY OPENS WITH INTERESTING MIX – SEPTEMBER 27
The Catskill Symphony Orchestra will open its 2008-09 five-concert season under the baton of Music Conductor Charles Schneider at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 27 in the Hunt College Union Ballroom. This opening concert, which is Sponsored by the Irving Berlin Charitable Fund. will offer a variety of musical styles, and will highlight two youthful soloists who already have established themselves as forces to be reckoned with on the musical scene. The Parnas Duo (Cellist Cicely, age 15 and 17-year-old violinist, Madalyn) will be the featured performers in the Frederick Delius Concerto for Violin and Cello which was composed in 1915. The sisters’ Duo won First Prize at the 2008 International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition. Each of them has established a firm foothold on a professional career, having performed individually as symphonic soloists, as multiple musical prizewinners and as recording artists. (visit parnusmusic.com) The concert will begin with Eric Satie’s composition Jack-in-the Box which was commissioned by the Russian Ballet in 1899. The French composer is perhaps best known to the public for his Gymnopédies, which has defined his image for much of the public. Jack-in-the Box, by contrast, has been described as a kind of stylized circus music with rather garish tones which sometimes make it appear as a sudden flash of blinding light from a grey sky. The concluding work on the program will be the Beethoven Seventh Symphony, which is without question one of the great works of symphonic literature. The first performance of this symphony in Vienna in 1813 was conducted by Beethoven at a time when he was already almost completely deaf. Its impact on the world of music was great, and inspired the well-known comment of Richard Wagner, who called it the apotheosis of the dance, no doubt referring to its dynamic energy. The contrasting second movement, opens as a gentle allegretto with one of the more memorable themes of symphonic literature, and builds to a more complex contrapuntal texture before returning to the opening stately calm. The concerts of the Catskill Symphony are made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency. As in the past several years, a generous grant allows any one or two adults to bring any number of children or older students to the performance without charge. Phone x2670 for more information.

MUG ONE MEETING - OCTOBER 8
Join MUG ONE, the Macintosh User Group of Oneonta, as they present: Macintosh Pundit Adam Engst!, on Wednesday, October 8 at 7:30 p.m. in IRC, LH#2, for a very special MUG ONE meeting. Noted Macintosh industry pundit Adam C. Engst will talk about recent trends in the technology world, focusing of course on how it all affects Apple and Macintosh users. Adam will talk about the rise of mobile, cloud computing (and how Apple and Google disagree), how our Macs will be possessed with ever-more helpful demons, and the pros and cons of the way Apple continues to integrate services between the Mac, the iPhone, and the Internet. Time permitting, he may even wax philosophic about where technology needs to go. And of course, he will answer questions. Considered one of the most influential figures in the Macintosh computer industry, Adam C. Engst is the editor and publisher of TidBITS, one of the oldest and largest Internet-based newsletters, distributed in five languages every week to hundreds of thousands of readers. CONGRATULATIONS
  • Congratulations to Donald R. Hill, Anthropology and Africana/Latino Studies, on being awarded a grant through EVIADA (Ethnomusicological Video for Instruction and Analysis Digital Archive) under an umbrella grant funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. EVIA is housed at the Indiana University Archives of Traditional Music ( http://www.indiana.edu/~eviada/) but run jointly by IU and the University of Michigan. The grant involves digitization at Michigan of ten hours of film and video that Dr. Hill shot in Carriacou, Grenada between 1971 and 2001. The video focuses on musicians who played for drumming rituals and quadrille dances. In February 2009, via an online program, Dr. Hill will be trained to insert metadata into the digitized video. Then in the summer of 2009, he will attend a two-week workshop during which he and the other grantees will complete annotation of the videos. Eventually IU and U Michigan will put the digitized video on the internet.
  • Congratulations to the Meteorology Club on a successful trip to Northern New Hampshire and Vermont, September 5-7, 2008. Led by advisor Rick Grimaldi, Earth Sciences, and faculty member Todd Ellis, Earth Sciences, the group of eleven students spent one day visiting the Weather Discovery Center (a weather museum) and Mt. Washington Observatory and the second day visiting the campus of Lyndon State University where they toured the meteorology building and facilities. All had a great time and learning experience. Meteorology Club students who took the trip are Kristin Lyons (president), Trisha Hosmer, Breanne Kempton, Mary Ellen Dunn, Kenneth Fisch, Alicia Pucci, Christopher Gorman, Tamara Russell, Heather O’Neill, Jennifer Finn, and Asia Dowtin.
  • Congratulations to the College at Oneonta Foundation who has received a gift of $2 million from the estate of Dorothy Anderson Wemple of Johnstown, a 1936 alumna of the College who passed away in November. The bequest will be used to establish and endow the Dorothy A. Wemple '36 Scholarship for English and Adolescence Education--English majors at the College. Mrs. Wemple had a long career teaching English at Knox Junior High School in Johnstown, where she also served as chair of the English Department until her retirement in 1974. In the same year, she received recognition from Outstanding Educators of America, based on her nomination by the school's principal. Mrs. Wemple was an active alumna of SUNY Oneonta, participating in events on campus and in the Capital District. Mrs. Wemple's gift is the largest ever made to the College by one of its alumni. It will support a minimum of 40 scholarships annually in perpetuity--10 each to students at the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior levels. The first scholarships will be awarded in the fall semester of 2009. More information about the Dorothy A. Wemple '36 Scholarship and the College at Oneonta Foundation is available from Paul J. Adamo at x2535.

The volume, edited by Dominick Cavallo, consists of essays relating family concerns to the larger American history. Simons previously reviewed Volume I of American History/American Families.
  • Hua Zhong, Management, Marketing and Information Systems, published a research paper in Annals of Operations Research, 161(1), 149-170, 2008. His paper, titled Scheduling vessels and container-yard operations with conflicting objectives considers the problem of coordinating the operations of two supply chain partners: a foreign shipping company and a domestic port. The two partners have conflicting business objectives, and the issue is to determine the optimal cycle time, by which the shipping company removes the empty containers from the domestic port, so that the joint profit of the two partners is maximized. The paper is co-authored with E. Boros, L. Lei and Y. Zhao.
