CONNECTING COMMUNITIES FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS
This past year, Connecting Communities for Health and Wellness was an integral part of improving the lives of our friends and neighbors in over eight counties in Central New York State (including Otsego County). Sponsored by Bassett Healthcare, I created Connecting Communities for Health and Wellness program as a way of reaching the needs of special populations such as minorities, older persons and persons living in poverty with disabilities, chronically mentally ill persons and other disenfranchised people. Our program has grown to include over twenty different health and wellness initiatives. Community health programs that are working in your neighborhoods help to combat childhood obesity, Type II Diabetes, several types of cancers, communicable diseases, tobacco related diseases, heart disease. Other programs encourage children accident prevention, occupational safety and access to health care, epically among high-risk low-income children. Many of the ideas we get, come from those who care enough to make a difference in the health and welfare of the people in their neighborhoods. At SUNY Oneonta, we are fortunate to have a number of people who want to help. Last year I received over 87 correspondence from my friends and colleagues at the college. I want to continue to encourage your thoughts and ideas. Together, we can continue to make a difference. If you would like to communicate an idea, or meet with me about similar goals, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. Steve Garner
